Aeolian Islands, Between History and Territory

The Aeolian Islands are an archipelago of seven volcanic islands off the northern coast of Sicily, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. They can't be reached directly from Catania: the connection is overland to the port of Milazzo (about 1h 15min by car or transfer), from which ferries and hydrofoils depart for the main islands.

Each island has a distinct character. Stromboli, with its almost constantly erupting volcano, offers evening excursions to watch the explosions from the Sciara del Fuoco. Lipari, the largest and most populated, is the archipelago's logistical hub, with a lively historic centre and famous white pumice quarries. Panarea is the most fashionable, with exclusive coves and a small harbour that gets busy in summer. Vulcano offers sulfur mud baths and the climb to the Gran Cratere. Salina, among the greenest, is known for its Malvasia vineyards and the villages of Pollara and Lingua.

A day trip to the Aeolian Islands is possible but demanding, considering the travel time from Catania to Milazzo plus the crossing: many visitors prefer to dedicate at least one night, choosing one or two islands as a base. In high season it's advisable to book ferries and accommodation well in advance.

For those short on time, there are organized day tours that include transfer from Catania, sailing between the smaller islands, and return in the evening — a convenient way to sample the archipelago without staying overnight.
