Marzamemi, Between History and Territory

Marzamemi began as a fishing village founded by the Arabs around its tonnara, one of the oldest and best-preserved tuna fisheries in Sicily, active until the 1960s. Today the main square, Piazza Regina Margherita, looks directly onto the old tonnara and the 18th-century Church of San Francesco di Paola, creating one of the most photographed views on the southeastern coast.

The village can be explored on foot in a few hours: low pastel-coloured houses, fishing nets hung out to dry, shops selling local products (bottarga, capers, preserves) and seafood restaurants overlooking the small harbour. In the evening, as the lights come on over the square, Marzamemi reveals its livelier side, without losing its village atmosphere.

The sea is the area's real strength: shallow, crystal-clear water suitable even for families, rocky coves a short distance away toward the Vendicari Reserve, and interesting seabeds for snorkeling. The Vendicari Nature Reserve, a few minutes by car, adds wild beaches, salt pans, and an important wetland for birdwatching.

Marzamemi pairs well with a day dedicated to Val di Noto: it's a short distance from both Noto and Syracuse, making it a natural stop for anyone planning a sea-and-Baroque itinerary in the same trip out from Catania.
