It's no accident that Taormina has been called "Sicily's balcony" for centuries. Perched on Mount Tauro about 200 metres above sea level, it offers a view that takes in the Ionian coast, the silhouette of Etna, and — on the clearest days — Calabria across the Strait of Messina.
The heart of the town is the Greek Theatre, built in the 3rd century BC and expanded in Roman times: it still hosts performances and events today, with a natural backdrop no stage design could ever match. From here, Corso Umberto runs through the old town past boutiques, Baroque churches, and the dramatic Piazza IX Aprile, a natural terrace overlooking the gulf.
Not far away, Isola Bella is a small nature reserve connected to the mainland by a strip of sand, reachable on foot or by the cable car that descends from the centre. Those looking for the area's finest sea will find some of the clearest water on the Sicilian Ionian coast here and at Mazzarò.
