Etna, Between History and Territory

At over 3,300 metres, Etna — "a Muntagna" to the people of Catania — is Europe's highest active volcano and one of the most closely monitored in the world. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 2013, it dominates the landscape of Eastern Sicily and is visible from virtually every point in the province, including the airport itself.

The southern slope, the most accessible from Catania, leads to Rifugio Sapienza at about 1,900 metres, the starting point for excursions to the summit craters. From here you can continue on foot with a licensed volcanology guide (mandatory above 2,900 metres) or by off-road vehicle, through old and recent lava flows that tell the story of the volcano's eruptive activity over recent decades.

Etna isn't just about trekking: its slopes are home to one of Italy's most fascinating wine regions, with vineyards on volcanic soils and wineries that combine tastings with stunning scenery. In winter, the north and south slopes become ski resorts — a rare experience just a few dozen kilometres from the sea.

Excursions are typically organized as half-day or full-day trips, often combined with a traditional lunch or a winery tasting. It's advisable to book official guided tours, especially in summer, and to dress in layers: temperatures at altitude can be much lower than on the coast.
